NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI), the automotive radar industry leader (source: Yole Intelligence), recently announced the first to introduce a new 28nm RFCMOS radar single-chip family for next-generation ADAS and autonomous driving systems. The new SAF85xx single-chip family integrates NXP's high-performance radar sensing capabilities and processing technology to provide Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs with greater flexibility to support short-, medium- and long-range radar applications to meet more challenging NCAP safety requirements. NXP has had technology leadership for more than 15 years, and the introduction of its single-chip radar family further enriches its advanced radar portfolio to further provide drivers with a safe environment and reduce accidents. DENSO Corporation, which specializes in cutting-edge radar technology, is a major customer of NXP and has also chosen to use these innovative technologies.

Mr. Hiroshi Kondo, Head of DENSO Corporation's Safety Systems business unit, said, "NXP's advanced radar sensing technology is critical to accelerating the development of next-generation ADAS. We believe that with NXP's compact, high-performance SAF85xx radar SoC, DENSO will extend our leadership position in ADAS."

NXP's new family of automotive radar SoCs includes high-performance radar transceivers and integrates a multi-core radar processor built on NXP's S32R radar computing platform. Compared to NXP's previous generation, the SAF85xx doubles RF performance and increases signal processing speed by 40 percent. The single-chip family provides 4D sensing for both corner and forward radar for many safety-critical ADAS applications, such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lateral traffic warning and automated parking. Thanks to the increased flexibility offered by the new family, OEMs can meet the expanding NCAP safety requirements and the surge in the number of radar sensors, with some analysts expecting at least five radar sensors to be installed in every vehicle in the future.

Developers will also benefit from the seamless performance scalability of the S32R family and its hardware and software design reuse benefits.

Our new single-chip family of radars provides reliable support for remote object detection and can also distinguish small objects next to large ones, such as cars on heavily trafficked multi-lane highways and fast-moving motorcycles around trucks," said Torsten Lehmann, executive vice president of NXP Semiconductors. The small form factor of the single-chip family allows customers to build radar sensor modules up to 30 percent smaller in size, enabling global ADAS system providers, such as DENSO, to further improve radar safety with this powerful new technology."
